Before a dancer ever steps on stage, an entire world has already been built. Not on a soundstage — but inside a computer. Creating real-time CGI environments for live performance is a unique discipline, blending traditional 3D artistry with the constraints and opportunities of real-time rendering.
Starting in Blender
Most of our environments begin in Blender. It is the tool of choice for modelling, sculpting, and texturing because of its flexibility and the quality of its output. But unlike film or game work, every asset we build has a specific purpose: it must look stunning in a live context, respond to performance data, and render at a consistent frame rate without a single frame drop.
This changes the creative process. We think in terms of modularity — elements that can be triggered, coloured, or deformed by real-time inputs. A forest scene, for instance, might have trees that pulse with energy when a performer approaches. A cityscape might shift its lighting based on the tempo of the music.
Bringing It to Life in Unreal Engine
Once assets are ready, they move into Unreal Engine. This is where the environment becomes interactive. We set up lighting that can change dynamically, materials that respond to data streams, and camera systems that follow performers autonomously.
The challenge is making it all feel intentional. Real-time does not mean random. Every visual shift is choreographed — timed to movement, cue, or musical beat. The technology enables spontaneity, but the craft lies in making that spontaneity read as deliberate artistry.
The Human Element
It can be tempting to focus entirely on the technical achievement. But the most compelling real-time environments are the ones that serve the performance, not overshadow it. The best CGI world is the one the audience barely notices as CGI — because it feels like a natural extension of the stage.
This is the balance we work toward: technology that amplifies human expression without stealing the spotlight.
Whether it’s a product launch, a theatrical production, or a one-of-a-kind brand activation, the worlds we build are designed for one thing — to make the moment unforgettable.
